The Clearing is a school of the arts and humanities in the Danish Folk School tradition where students learn by doing. Nestled on it's own 120 plus acre natural setting in Wisconsin's beautiful Door County, it is perfectly attuned for teaching the art of nature and Outdoor Photography. In fact, that is precisely what I've named the class that I've been teaching at The Clearing for the last twelve years. Normally held in early October, my week long class is a thorough workshop that accommodates all skill levels. Lecture, Critiques and Field sessions all add to the week, and we also get to see some of Door County's greatest natural wonders including Newport State Park, Peninsula State Park, Cave Point County Park, Toft Point Nature Conservancy and others. We still process film at this workshop, so film shooters need not worry about their chosen recording medium. We also accommodate the digital shooter with a new digital projection system.

The Clearing needs to be experienced as no words can adequately describe the "Clearing Experience". Home cooked meals are just one of the features that make this wonderful place created and still inspired by the famed Landscape Architect, Jens Jensen, truly special. The workshop includes most of your meals, lodging in two person rooms or three or five person quaint, cozy and comfortable small dorms, and the workshop itself.

Mike Schneider, the Executive Director is just one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and you will meet Mike and all the equally wonderful staff during a week at the Clearing. Occasionally, I also conduct weekend workshops for the Clearing's Weekend Workshops Program (this year in November), check their yearly schedule for listings. These weekend events are more basic in skill level. Will Clay and I have held a Winter Photography Phototour at the Clearing in past years. We hold this event at the Clearing, but it is an event we organize and run ourselves. We hope to be running this event again in February of 2009.
